Fausto riesplode alla grande dal palco del Festival di Sanremo, ottenendo un successo tanto inatteso quanto straordinario; il quarto posto che lo penalizza però in virtù del fatto che la votazione popolare non aiuta chi non è al momento al massimo della popolarità. Le vendite gli daranno giustizia perchè ""Io amo"" viene superata solo dalla canzone vincitrice ""Si può dare di più"" dell'inedito trio Morandi-Ruggeri-Tozzi. L' album che deve uscire dopo Sanremo, lascia spiazzata la sua casa discografica che non si aspettava un successo di così vaste proporzioni, non ha materiale nuovo, e fa uscire così ""Io amo e gli altri successi"",dove, al fianco del brano nuovo, e a ""Notte d'amore"" (in cui duetta ancora con Loredana Bertè), Fausto ci ripresenta i suoi più grandi successi: da ""Deborah"" ad ""Io camminero"" e molti altri ancora; per rinfrescare la memoria a chi non li ricordava bene; per la prima volta scala i vertici delle classifiche di vendite per gli albums.
1988: Ancora un Festival di Sanremo, e ancora alla grande; nonostante il rifuito all'ultimo momento della nuova canzone di Toto Cutugno ""Emozioni"" (che poi canterà lo stesso Cutugno) e decide di puntare su""Mi manchi"" che bissa il successo dell'anno precedente. Parte con una fortunatissima tourneè estiva che lo porta su e giù per l'Italia, occasione buona per presentare i brani del nuovo album fatto tutto di inediti, con la sola eccezione di ""Solo lei"": il titolo è ""Non c'è neanche il coro"". Sulla fine dell'anno, partecipando come ospite a Fantastico, scopre una straordinaria intesa musicale e vocale con la collega ed amica Anna Oxa; una collaborazione nata per gioco, ma di cui sentiremo parlare...
1989: A coronamento di un biennio veramente eccezionale, e di un escalation straordinaria, giunge la vittoria al Festival di Sanremo in coppia con Anna Oxa. La bellissima ""Ti lascerò"", plasmata alla perfezione per le caratteristiche vocali dei due interpreti, andrà ad incastonarsi fra le perle della carriera di Fausto Leali. Una vittoria annunciata, ma non per questo non meritata (i 5.851.574 voti stanno lì a dimostrarlo),""Ti lascerò"" viene considerata da molti, una delle canzoni migliori degli ultimi anni, uno di quei brani nati già con l'etichetta di evergreen stampata addosso. Il duetto Oxa-Leali si ricostituisce in aprile in occasione dell'Eurofestival con un nuovo brano: ""Avrei voluto"". Esce anche l'album ""Leali"" prodotto e arrangiato da Fio Zanotti, Pinuccio Pirazzoli e Natale Massara. Nell'album due piccole sorprese: il ritorno come autore di Pino Donaggio e la rivisitazione di ""Stand by me"" ossia ""Pregherò"".
1991: Sull'onda lunga di questa fine anni 80, per lui veramente staordinari, che ne hanno sancito una nuova e definitiva rinascita artistica alla soglia dei cinquant'anni; pubblica un nuovo lavoro inedito dal titolo ""Saremo promossi"" dal buon successo di vendita e che lo vede interprete apprezzato in una lunga tournee italiana.
1992: A distanza di tre anni dal trionfo, decide di sfidarsi, ripresentandosi ancora sul palco del Festival di Sanremo con ""Perchè"" struggente canzone scritta da Aleandro Baldi e Giancarlo Bigazzi, che ottiene grande successo grazie alla profonda e sapiente interpretazione che Leali sa darle.
1993: E' l'anno del riepilogo della seconda fortunata parentesi della sua carriera artistica. Esce l'album ""Le più belle canzoni"" in cui ci ripropone le suggestive interpretazioni di Ti lascerò, Pregherò, Io amo, Mi manchi e molte altre ancora; in un susseguirsi di emozioni lunghe tanto quanto dura l'ascolto dell'intero disco.
1994: Dopo un periodo di breve e meritato riposo, partecipa e trionfa al nuovo festival della canzone napoletana ""Viva Napoli"" ideato e trasmesso da Canale 5, con un indimenticabile interpretazione della sua Malafemmena. Subito dopo il trionfo televisivo, esce l'album ""Anima nuda"" che ottiene grande successo e che vede l'artista partecipare a molte trasmissioni televisive.
1996: Realizza a New York, in collaborazione con famosi artisti statunitensi, l'album ""Non solo blues"" dal sapore internazionale e decisamente nuovo per il nostro mercato, che contiene le versioni italiane di celebri hits anni 60 e 70. Il suo merito, in questo disco, è su tutti, quello di aver fatto conoscere ai giovani queste bellissime canzoni senza tempo della musica internazionale, da lui magistralmente reinterpretate grazie alla sua voce unica, perfettamente adattabile al rhytm & blues.
1997: Sull'onda di questo nuovo grande successo, si presenta a Sanremo con ""Non ami che te"", brano estratto dal nuovo lavoro ""Non ami che te - non solo blues 2"" che segue la fortunata l'impronta americana tracciata dal lavoro precedente, e che presenta, oltre ad una nuova raccolta di reinterpretazioni blues, il brano sanremese e altri due inediti: ""Voglio un'anima"", blues italiano arricchito da un coro gospel e ""Se c'è l'amore"".
Più di una generazione si è accompagnata in oltre trent'anni di carriera alla sua particolare, calda e coinvolgente vocalità. Molti aggettivi sono stati usati e molte definizioni coniate per questo straordinario interprete amato dalle regine della musica italiana; ma a nostro giudizio, quello che porta e porterà indelebile sulla pelle; perfettamente calzante è: ""Il Negro bianco"" anche se può sembrare scontata e ripetitiva. Ma la sua voce, roca e graffiante, di scuola blues, è riuscita a proporre in Italia un diverso modo di interpretare la canzone, venendo poi seguito nello stile da altri artisti. Ma lui resta il migliore.
