Ryan Giggs
| Biography |
One of the most famous players in the game, the Manchester United and Wales winger has won virtually every cup or championship medal open to his club at home and abroad.
Born in Cardiff, Giggs and his family moved to Manchester when he was seven, though with a thoroughly Welsh parentage and fiercely loyal to his home country, playing for England was never an option.
Soccer-mad throughout childhood, he was spotted at age nine by a Manchester City scout, and from there it was a short distance to organised contests as part of the local district team. At first it looked as though he would play for City, though scouts from Old Trafford were aware of his emerging talent, and by the age of 14 he was signed up for United's youth side.
After years of training he made his first team debut in 1991, and has gone on to become an integral figure in Sir Alex Ferguson's immensely successful squad.
Success at international level with Wales has been elusive, but Giggs has nonetheless been a key part of the squad.
After defeat by Romania in 1993 and now Russia in 2003, will he ever represent his country in the finals of a major tournament?
