| Biography |
Aimar with his strong dribbling, an eye for the whereabouts of his teammates and anticipation of promising goal-scoring opportunities, has become on the hottest players in the Spanish Liga Primera.
Pablo César`s first national team triumph came in 1997 when, aged 18, he was selected to represent his country in the U20 FIFA World Cup of that year. Aimar, one of the youngest of the tournament, was voted third best player by FIFA and Argentina won the cup. Two years later, in June 1999 he made his debut for senior team. If the performance of Argentina in the 2002 WC is catalogued as a terrible disappointment Aimar is one of those few players to finish the cup with their name clean.
The Rí o Cuarto-born Aimar started his career with famous club of River Plate. The presence of Enzo Francescoli and Ariel Ortega limited his appearances for the club but everything changed in the Clausura 1997 when he firmly established in the starting line up and the next season he went on to partner up front with Javier Saviola. The pair of great players won the Apertura 1999 and Clausura 2000 for River Plate and called the attention of European clubs.
Transferred in the winter break of the 2000-01 season to Valencia, Aimar failed to fulfill the expectations during his first season at the club as they lost the UCL final to Bayern München. However his next season was his confirmation, Valencia won the 2002 Spanish Liga Primera and Aimar was a clue player of the squad playing 33 matches and scoring 4 times. A streak of bad results during the last match days of the 2002-03 kept out Valencia of the UCL for the 2003-04. [December 2003] |
