Gaston grew up in Temperley, a neighbourhood in Buenos Aires. He began playing tennis at the age of six with his family. He is very attached to his parents, Norberto and Marisa and is the youngest of three children. His father overcame a life-threatening illness, becoming Gaston's greatest inspiration. His siblings, Diego and Julieta travel with him a lot during the tour to support and comfort him since he spends so much time away from home. As a teenager, Gaston began with the right foot in tennis, showing his talent from the very begining. He finished as the No. 2 junior in Argentina in 1996 (Mariano Puerta finished no.1). While growing up, he enjoyed playing football (soccer) and rugby in addition to tennis. He states as his favorite sports memory Argentina's 1986 World Cup win over England and Diego Maradona as the best player of all times. He's also a bigtime fan of Independiente, a local football team of Argentina. He holds an impressive 13-3 career Davis Cup singles record in seven ties which turned him into one of the most respected players during the DC ties among his peers. He considers clay being his favorite surface and would like to make history winning Roland Garros in the near future. Currently, he lives in Buenos Aires and is coached by Franco Davin (former DC captain). His fitness trainer is Fernando Aguirre. |
