Tyrone Power

Biography
Tyrone Power, Jr. was an American movie actor who appeared in dozens of films from the 1930s to the 1950s. He was the son of British born actor Tyrone Power Sr. (1869-1931), and the great-grandson of famed Irish actor Tyrone Power (1795-1841).

Power, Jr. followed his father into acting in American films. He rapidly became a matinee idol whose fans followed his off-screen activities (including playing polo) as avidly as his films.

Many of his roles were as a swashbuckling hero, but he also often appeared as a protagonist with a dark side. Power's spectacular good looks and good nature may have caused him to be underrated as an actor during his career and after.

He worked against his leading-man image in movies such as 'The Razor's Edge' (1946) and 'The Sun Also Rises' (1957). Power's other films include 'Mark of Zorro' (1940), 'Nightmare Alley' (1947) and 'Witness for the Prosecution' (1957).

Capitalising on his looks and fame, his extramarital affairs contributed to the failure of his marriages. Although he was a Catholic, Power divorced his first two wives. During World War II Power served as an aviator in the United States Marine Corps.

Like his father, Power died while on a movie set, suffering a heart attack while filming 'Solomon and Sheba', in November 1958. He was interred in the Hollywood Forever Memorial Park Cemetery in Hollywood, California.
