Biography
Handsome stage-trained actor who has begun to come into his own on film following his success as the slimy lawyer John Millaney in Sex, Lies, and Videotape (1989). Gallagher made an auspicious debut as pop singer Caesare in The Idolmaker (1980), which failed miserably at the box office, and later appeared as part of the ménage ê trois in Summer Lovers (1982), which again failed to click. He also appeared in Dreamchild (1985) and High Spirits (1988) before finally landing an ideal screen vehicle. Following Sex, Lies, and Videotape, he had a small role in Late for Dinner (1991), and was memorable as movie executive Larry Levy in The Player (1992), opposite Tim Robbins, for whom he also appeared as a bubbleheaded news anchor in Bob Roberts (1992). More recent credits include Malice, Short Cuts (both 1993), The Hudsucker Proxy and Mother's Boys (both 1994). Gallagher's stage credits include the critically acclaimed Broadway revivals of "Long Day's Journey Into Night" (for which he received a 1986 Tony nomination) and "Guys and Dolls," as Sky Masterson, in 1992. His latest films are While You Were Sleeping and The Underneath (both 1995).
