Unlike most people in this town, I actually grew up here. I was raised in an area called Mt. Washington, located in northeast Los Angeles. The area was renowned as an artist’s retreat, at least that is what my parents always said, although I don’t recall meeting many artists. It was an interesting neighborhood with lots of steep hills and valleys. My best friend and I used to slide down weed covered hills on cardboard boxes and tromp through the valleys like we were Indiana Jones. It never really felt like living in a big city until you got to the bottom of the hill where the primary paint color was graffiti and the window treatment of choice, burglar bars.
The public schools in my area also left a lot to be desired, but somehow I managed to get a decent education. At seventeen, I moved to New York and started acting and modeling. The modeling led me to Europe where for the next few years I lived out of a suitcase between Italy, France and New York. It was amazing traveling the world and experiencing so many different people and cultures.
Ultimately, I ended up settling back in New York where I attended New York University for the next couple of years. It was during that time when I took a random trip to Miami Beach. I was amazed. It was the polar opposite of New York; turquoise water, clean air and most importantly it was inexpensive. Soon after I met Jenna, the only woman who ever gave me butterflies in my stomach. No question about it, I was in love. Only one problem, she lived in Miami and I lived in New York.
After six months of writing letters and looking at horrifying phone bills, I ditched the Big Apple and moved to Miami. A year and a half later, we bought a house together and were both attending the University of Miami. A month before graduation, my modeling agent sent me to an audition for a new NBC Soap Opera called “Passions”. The rest, as they say, is history. The day after I graduated from U.M. with a degree in film making, I flew out to California and started work on Passions as “Luis”. Jenna and I have since married and everything seems to have come full circle. I’m back in L.A., living in the hills and surrounded by what I hear is an artist’s community.
