17, gymnast on the 1996 gold-winning U.S. Olympic team, filed court papers to gain legal status as an adult and requested a restraining order against her parents. The diminutive athlete went into hiding, claiming that her domineering parents had mismanaged her finances and were living solely off of her earnings. The case, which was reportedly settled out of court the following week, illustrated the excesses of modern-day gymnastics.
