She was a cheerleader for the Crimson Tide football team, and homecoming queen at the University of Alabama. Heading to New York, she began working at an advertising agency. At the suggestion of a friend, she began modeling. Though only 5'7" she signed with the Wilhemina Agency and did about 20 national TV commercials. She moved to L.A. in 1983 and within weeks landed her first movie role in The Man Who Loved Women.
