When I decided to make this page, I had no doubt about what I was going to say. Now since then, I've seen so many sites about Kate that I wonder what I can possibly say that would be original... First, let me say that I was already admiring some of Kate's work back when I lived in Switzerland but I still wasn't prepare to hear her on the bridge. You see, I've always heard the actress who lends her voice to her in the french version, I had never heard her real voice. And I must say, I fell in love with that voice the first instant she stepped on Voyager. It's like I had finally met the real person... a revelation, sort of. I've read somewhere that Kate speaks french. If only she could make the french version too... *sigh* Anyway, I liked Kate Columbo and I LOVE Kathryn Janeway. For who hasn't read that somewhere else, here is a short biography :
Kate Mulgrew is born on April 29, 1955 in Dubuque, Iowa. (For the astrologer in you, she is a Taurus with a Gemini Ascendant). She is the second oldest of eight children, the oldest girl, so she learned quickly to help around. Her family is a "quintessential Irish Catholic
lan", as she said to TV GUIDE in 1996. She took her first job at 13 and later, around 16, worked in diners to put herself through school. In 1981, she married Robert Egan and they had two children: Ian, born in 1983, and Alexander, born in 1984. The couple separated in 1993 and their divorce became final in mid-1995. On the gossip side, she's been involved with Rick Kolbe, one of the Star Trek director, before encountering her true soulmate. In April 1999, she got married to Tim Hagan who was not at all part of the show business. He has a daughter from a previous marriage, so now the happy couple have three children. :o)
She was around 20 when she got the role that really started her career in 1975: Mary Ryan in the soap Ryan's Hope which ran for a few years after she left in 1979. She did some apparition in that show in the later years (or voice-off). Then she worked a lot in every branch of her art, television, theater, and movies. You'll find a detailed career profile on this site. I also strongly suggest "Totally Kate!" website (see below) where you'll find an incredible collection of pictures from her movies and her theater roles.
In mid-1994, she had no professional engagement and was ready to sell her house when Paramount called her back for Voyager to replace the leaving actress who had been chosen for the role of Kathryn Janeway (named Elizabeth Janeway at that time). Although she was suffering from the flu at the time, she went to the studio and the rest is history. She says that she struck gold that year, although Kate admits it has been hard on her boys because of the long working hours the show imposes (something between 12 to 15 hours a day, then she has to learn her lines for the next!).
Kate loves to cook and organize dinner parties. She loves to read and buy a stack of books every months (where does she find the time to read, I'll never know!). She loves to swim. To see her friends is very important to her and she said that she can't function well on a deep level without them. When asked if she, like Janeway, loves coffee, she answered "where do you think that came from ?"... If you want to see some pictures of Kate at home, try to go to this site (4 great pages)!
